The final project of a GIS methods course, we were given a glut of data on Detroit's housing situation and asked to make something meaningful from it all. Geolocating successful permit requests, I found an interesting spatial trend between construction and demolition requests. Construction requests, though overall lower than demolition requests, seemed more frequent in the western part of the city, in both over all number and when normalized over population by census tract. By contrast, demolition request appeared more frequently at the center of the city and to the south, though a small cluster of requests exist to the west. In both maps, however, there exists an area directly north of the Greater Downtown that contains the highest number of construction and demolition permits per 1,000 people.
